A key scientific model in most of our assignments is the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model. This model can be used to predict both employee burnout and employee engagement, and consequently overall organisational performance.
The JD-R model assumes that employee well-being is dependent on two factors, classified as job demands and resources, both personal resources and work resources. In this way, it constitutes an overarching model that may be applied to various occupational settings, irrespective of the particular demands and resources involved.
Extensive research has provided evidence for the existence of two simultaneous processes: high job demands exhaust employees’ mental and physical resources and therefore lead to the depletion of energy and to health problems. This is the health impairment process. In contrast, job resources foster employee engagement and extra-role performance. This is the motivational process.
It is important to know that several studies have shown that job resources can function as a buffer to the impact of job demands on stress-reactions. In addition, research has confirmed that job resources in particular have motivational potential when job demands are high.
It has been scientifically proven that a higher employee engagement results in a substantially improved employee retention and a higher company productivity and profit.
The use of the JD-R model gives a very clear focus and direction to which interventions would be the most suitable to improve the performance of a specific team or organisation.
